Objective Insight for a More Effective Board

Our Board Evaluation process is designed for businesses seeking an objective, data-backed review of Board performance and governance. It is particularly valuable when organisations are navigating growth and change, preparing for Board succession, or responding to stakeholder and investor expectations.

Growth and Change

Board Evaluation can support organisations experiencing:

  • A change in ownership structure
  • Expansion into new markets or territories
  • Pre- or post-M&A integration and alignment needs
  • Rapid growth resulting from market or revenue increases
  • The introduction of new products or services

Succession Planning

Board Evaluation provides an objective basis for:

  • Identifying skills and experience gaps
  • Aligning Board needs with corporate strategy
  • Scenario testing for unexpected vacancies
  • Identifying leadership development and training needs
  • Developing objective criteria for new Board members

Supporting Stakeholders and Investors

Board Evaluation can help organisations:

  • Increase transparency and openness to strengthen trust
  • Benchmark performance against industry standards and best practices
  • Strengthen Board independence and objectivity
  • Improve risk management processes

Our Five-Step Process

1. Evaluation Briefing

We begin by clarifying the objectives and scope of the evaluation. We review relevant Board minutes, strategic documents, and governance policies, and engage Board members to prepare them for the process.

2. BET© Online Questionnaire

Board members complete a confidential online questionnaire using a five-point scale. Free-text fields provide deeper qualitative feedback, while rankings, levels, and gap analysis highlight key areas of alignment or difference.

3. Interviews and Observation

We conduct individual interviews with respondents and relevant stakeholders. We also review supporting documents, such as previous internal Board reviews or Board minutes.

Where appropriate, we observe a Board meeting to gain direct insight into Board dynamics.

4. Findings and Reporting

All results are consolidated into a comprehensive report providing:

  • Clear insight into Board performance
  • Evidence of strengths and development areas
  • Recommendations for immediate “quick wins”
  • Proposed medium- and long-term improvements

5. Guidance, Feedback and Workshops

Recommendations are prioritised according to their importance and feasibility. Optional workshops help the Board establish focused workstreams and support the implementation of agreed actions.

A follow-up evaluation can be conducted within 12 to 18 months to review progress.
